To meet this challenge, we are designing and building airborne power generators that use 95% less material than a comparable wind turbine. This is a big deal and it’s exceptionally hard. Windlift has been working on this technology for over 10 years, and we now have line of sight to completing technical development and bringing an airborne wind energy product to the world.

Aircraft / UAV Structural Analysis and Design Engineer

Windlift is hiring a UAV Structural Analysis and Design Engineer to join the UAV Design team.  The UAV Design team will design the airborne power generator, with responsibility for the complete aerostructure, including wing, fuselage, tail surfaces and propeller/turbine, electromechanical tether, ground anchor system, and ground-based support structures and mechanisms.  

As the UAV Structural Analysis and Design Engineer, You:

  • Have a MS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 5+ years of experience or a BS degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 7+ years of experience, with a significant portion of that experience devoted to structural modeling, analysis and design of high-performance composite structures using Finite Element Analysis techniques, preferably applied to aircraft and/or UAVs.
  • Have a strong background using tools like FEMAP, NASTRAN and/or CATIA-Elfini Structural Analysis (EST) tools to create and analyze FEA models, and then use results to inform design modifications. 
  • Have experience using 3D CAD tools such as CATIA V5 and translating between CAD and FEA tools to quickly update models, execute analyses and use the results to drive necessary updates back into the master CAD models.
  • Can find the correct balance between respecting traditional methods (“what works”) and imagining a better way in view of materials and component improvements (“what if”).  
  • Are comfortable in a fast paced, rapid design and prototyping environment that will require rapid design turns of various system structural components, complete with analysis, prototype manufacture and testing. 
  • Love to work on difficult problems, build cool things, experiment at the edge of what is possible, learn new skills, and share your experience with the team.

The ideal candidate will also:

  • Have extensive experience with Finite Element Modeling and Analysis of high-performance composite structures, particularly as applied to small but highly loaded aircraft such as UAVs.  
  • Be proficient with various Finite Element Modeling and Analysis tools such as FEMAP and NASTRAN or similar tools, as well as CAD tools such as CATIA V5 for part and assembly definition. 
  • Have a strong understanding of how high-performance composite structures are designed, manufactured and analyzed, including consideration of bond interfaces between components of a composite assembly influence bulk material property models for the structure, the construction of the finite element model/mesh and analysis results as it relates to strength and deformation analysis results. 
  • Have extensive experience with the development of structural finite element models and corresponding materials property models for composite laminate structures, including composite sandwich (laminate + core) structures.  
  • Be experienced in the design and execution of structural testing procedures to validate and/or calibrate analysis models and results.  This should include experience with both component structural testing as well as testing of larger assemblies containing a number of bonded together composite structural elements, metal (typically aluminum) components and mechanical assemblies.  Have experience designing the test procedure, integrating appropriate measurement sensors and equipment, hands on execution of tests, data collection and data reduction/analysis and comparison of test data to analysis model outputs.
  • Be comfortable with and enjoy a fast-paced, design-analyze-build-test design cycle process.

Controls Engineer

We’re hiring multiple Controls Engineers at different education and experience levels. The Controls Team will model components of the airborne power generator, develop and test control algorithms in simulation, update the simulator and autopilot software as required, and support flight testing. You:

  • Have a BS in an engineering field, and 2 years of experience working with control systems or a higher degree,
  • Have a strong background in control theory and flight mechanics,
  • Have a working knowledge of modelling and simulating dynamic systems,
  • Can read, modify, and debug software (C++),
  • Can process data by writing scripts (MATLAB) or in spreadsheets (Excel), and
  • Love to work on difficult problems, build cool things, experiment at the edge of what is possible, learn new skills, and share your experience with the team.

Proposal Manager

Windlift is hiring a Proposal Manager to join the Business Development team. The Business Development team is responsible for tracking Government needs (from Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA etc. Broad Agency Announcements (BAA), open calls and networking), generating proposals to solve those needs, securing funding from SBIR, RIF and other sources, negotiating statements of work with technical and program management counterparts, and managing the relationship with all stakeholders. The Proposal Manager will be responsible for coordinating, producing, submitting and tracking requests for information (RFI), requests for proposals (RFP), and similar proposals — on time, compliant with regulations and filing requirements, and with input from the full team.

As the Proposal Manager, you:

  • have 10+ years of government proposal, contracting, pricing and/or project management experience.

  • have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher, in Business or Engineering (preferred).
  • take ownership — interested in managing the full proposal lifecycle from early prospecting and kick-off meetings through proposal submission, contract negotiation, and beyond.
  • are collaborative — experienced in managing across multiple teams of engineers and other stakeholders to gather and integrate technical information, project plans and budgets.
  • are organized — able to develop and leverage databases, dashboards and other tools (MS Project, MS Planner) to facilitate all aspects of proposal writing.
  • are punctual — able to set a schedule and manage others to hit deadlines.
  • are detail oriented — able to manage numerous, complex and, at times, conflicting requirements of the various proposal channels.
  • can work remotely, but are available to travel (<10%).

      Composites Manufacturing Technician

      Windlift is hiring a Technician to join the manufacturing team.  The manufacturing team will be responsible for turning designs into finished, ready-to-fly airborne power generators. This will include fabricating the composite aircraft frame, building mechanical subsystems (joints, controls, etc.), and installing electronic assemblies. In addition, the manufacturing team will be responsible for building tooling, fixtures, test beds, and other items for the shop.

      As the Manufacturing Technician, you:

      • Have a high school diploma, or relevant manufacturing experience.
      • Are good with your hands and skilled in manufacturing fundamentals, including using hand tools, sanding, shaping, gluing and masking.
      • Are proficient in fabricating mechanical assemblies, including using band saws, belt sanders, drill presses, and hand drills, and assembling small parts.
      • Are knowledgeable about composite manufacture, including vacuum bagging, carbon fiber layups, fiberglass layups, and mold preparation.
      • Are punctual.
      • Are a good team player.
      • Can find the correct balance between respecting traditional methods (“what works”) and imagining a better way in view of materials and component improvements (“what if”).  
      • Are comfortable in a fast paced, ever-changing environment. For example, the build team will build test fixtures and participate in testing of all types.
